163% increase in Alcohol related Hospital Admissions in over 65s

This news story really concerned me. How is alcohol being addressed in the over 65s in Somerset? Lets just look at the figures for the aging population. Between 1995 and 2025 the number of people over the age of 80 is set to increase by up to 50 per cent and the number of people over 90 will double (Department of Health, 2001). West Somerset already has the highest concentration of over-50s in the UK – 52.8% compared with the national average of 34.5%.

Counselling can be a positive step for an older person. Estimates of the prevalence of depression in older people vary, many researchers and clinicians holding that it is the most common mental health condition of late life (Blazer, D.G., 1989).  It has been found to be particularly common in women, people who are single, those suffering bereavement and other stressful life events and in those lacking an adequate social and emotional support network.

Older people can also have to face life threatening illnesses such as heart disease or cancer for example. In the literature relating to older people cognitive behavioural therapy has been the most widely researched single approach as being effective in treating psychological problem in the elderly. It has also been shown to have positive effect in the treatment of anxiety, Stanley, M.A. et al. (2003) found improvements not only immediately post treatment but later, at one year follow up.

In Minehead New Leaf has counsellor Juliet Edwardson who is offering a professional counselling service. She is also trained and qualified in CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) therapy. If you are interested in accessing her services or finding out more please call Becky Wright on 07590684888 or email becky@newleaf.uk.com its important to note that we are not a specialist alcohol service. Turning Point is still delivering free alcohol services in Somerset.

Sessions are £30 for the initial meeting and £40 thereafter.
