Lending ourselves to others

Ledning yourself to others

I love this old Beech tree its stands on the Quantocks. It lends itself to others so much. Young lovers have carved their names in its branches. Children have enjoyed the rope swings, birds and wildlife drink from the water collected within its deep root wells and its been around like a silent companion for many over the years.

For me I just admire the way its offered what it has for others to enjoy and make use of. As members of humanity isn’t this something we need to do more of. What is it that you can offer which someone else could make use of. It could be your strength and determination, it maybe your ability to listen and help someone make sense of whats going on in their life. You may even have an untapped talent which you never make use of.

As a counsellor we often lend our clients our awareness. Although this phrase almost denotes that we would want it returned at a later stage which is not true. As a counsellor we make ourselves accessible to the client and be of service to them for the duration of our work together.  Consciously or unconsciously, every one of us does render some service or other. If we cultivate the habit of doing this service deliberately, our desire for service will steadily grow stronger, and will make, not only for our own happiness, but that of the world at large.  Mahatma Gandhi
