A company or organisation’s health is dependent on the wellbeing of the individuals it employs. Austerity measures over the last few years and the pace of modern society have lead to more and more individuals facing ever growing pressure to perform both in the workplace and in the personal aspects of their lives. This pressure can damage relationships with friends and family whilst under-achievement at work will influence earning potential and have a negative impact on the employer. For the individual, trying to keep all parties happy can feel like a vicious circle that they simply don’t know how to manage.
As a result of these pressures people can be left feeling overwhelmed, tired and insecure – affecting health and general wellbeing. Many people recognise that they need assistance and have a strong desire to ask for guidance and support but simply don’t know where to go or who to confide in. Some worry about the stigma of mental ill health.
Thankfully, times have changed and talking about your feelings and discussing issues with a professional is no longer taboo. Rather, it is recognised as a positive opportunity for problem solving and personal growth and can, of course, be attributed to improvements in general health and an improved state of mind.
Clearly then, it is in the interest of a business or organisation to help its employees gain the support they need at a personal level to benefit them at a professional level – not just for the individual’s welfare, but also for improved performance within the business or organisation.
Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
Many companies across Somerset have seen the advantages of providing a confidential counselling service for their employees as it leads to a healthier, more productive workplace. In fact, it makes good business sense when you consider:
• One in five employees suffer from work related stress each year
• According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), an estimated 13.4 million working days were lost in 2002 due to work related stress
• The Chartered Institute for Professional Development (CIPD) found that absence costs employers an average of £522 for each employee per year. This amounts to an estimated annual cost of £13 billion for the UK economy
New Leaf have worked for a range of EAP providers and also provide a range of positive services to help employers meet the emotional health and wellbeing needs of their workforce. These include,
