Free Mental Health First Aid Training for Agriculture Somerset

Farmers and those living in rural communities in Somerset are facing a period of significant uncertainty, in the short to medium term, with a potential negative impact on their mental health and well-being. In such times, efforts to address the underlying causes of anxiety and distress, and support mental health and well-being should be intensified. Farm workers in particular carry a significantly elevated risk of suicide compared to wider society. This course aims to help you become more confident to intervene when someone is showing signs of mental ill health.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), was developed by the Mental Health First Aid England and facilitated by a local accredited Instructor, Becky Wright from New Leaf. It is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing the worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Just like physical first aid is provided until medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved.

What will I learn at Mental Health First Aid Certification Training?

The MHFA program aims to improve mental health literacy and provide the skills and knowledge to help people better manage potential or developing mental health problems in themselves, a family member, a friend or a colleague.

This course will teach participants how to:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems.
  • Provide initial help.
  • Guide a person towards appropriate professional help.

MHFA aims to:

  • Preserve life where a person may be a danger to themselves or others.
  • Provide help to prevent the mental health problem from developing into a more serious state.
  • Promote the recovery of good mental health.
  • Provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem.
